MAVRO
The word "mavro"
means black and denotes the colour of this distinctively large berry. The
main grape variety on the Island, it produces dark and robust red wines that
are high in tannin.
MARATHEFTIKO
A true quality red grape variety that produces very dark wine, rich in character,
with a very distinctive bouquet.
XYNISTERI
Known in Cyprus as "aspro", which means white, this variety of golden yellow
grape is widely harvested for the production of sweet and dry white wines.
OPHTHALMO
A red variety that produces a light, fruity, brilliant red wine. The word
ophthalmo derives from the Greek word for eyeball, probably because the berry
is so round.
